About the Yellow Capsicum Seeds

Yellow capsicum, also known as yellow bell pepper or sweet pepper (Capsicum annual), is becoming popular in urban India. It can be stuffed and cooked or sliced in salads. Yellow capsicum plants require more care and attention than most other vegetable crops to get proper yield. The plant needs daily 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight when grown in winter.

Sowing

  • Seeds can be sown throughout the year. Best time to sow the seeds is from August to December.
  • Take a medium sized seedling tray with drainage holes at the bottom and fill the cups with a moist coco-peat..
  • Sow 2-3 seeds per cup. Since Capsicum seeds are small, avoid sowing them very deep.
  • Keep the seedling tray indoors till the seeds germinate.
  • Mist the seed tray daily with the help of hand sprayer.
  • If the seed beds are made outdoors, protect them from heavy rain or direct sunlight by making a temporary roof of the plastic sheet.
  • Seeds will germinate within the first 6-8 days. Then put the tray in a partially sunny spot.
  • Second week onwards, seedlings will start growing into a small plant. At this stage exposé the seedlings to more & more sunlight for leaf growth.
  • After the second week, keep only a single seedling per cell/cup. Cut off the weak, small & lagging seedlings with a pair of scissors.
  • Transplant the seedling after 4 weeks from sowing without disturbing its roots.
  • Plant the seedlings minimum 2 feet apart (60x60 or 60x45 cm) from each other on raised beds. Plant only single seedlings at the centre of a single regular 10 to 12 inch pot.
Fill the cells/cups with a moist coco-peat medium

Caring

  • Seeds will germinate within the first six days or even much earlier & tiny seedlings will be visible with first leaves.
  • If more than one seed has germinated per hole, cut off the smaller seedlings & only keep one seedling per spot.
  • Radish plants require full sunlight (6-8 hours) in winter, so place your containers accordingly.
  • Water your Radish container / raised bed every day in the form of a light shower with a watering can. Use sprinklers for watering the Radish plants outdoors.
  • Manuring: Add optimum quality organic manure with 2:1 ratio before sowing the seeds. Use organic manure like the well rotten cow dung manure, farmyard manure, Compost or Vermicompost
  • Look for the early signs of fungal / insect infestation. Spray appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms are visible.
  • Red Radish matures in 25 to 30 days after sowing. Radish roots & leaves can be harvested by uprooting them along with the whole plant from the soil.
Hold the seeds and sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup. Since Lavender seeds are small in size, do not sow them deep

Common Problems

Why is my yellow capsicum plant dying?
Capsicum is susceptible to many diseases and insect infections. Always look for the early signs of any insect/fungal/ any other infections. Spray appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms of such diseases are spotted.
Why is my yellow capsicum plant not growing?
The soil around yellow capsicum has to be maintained in loose friable condition without allowing formation of crust, only then the plant will grow properly. Also No weeds should be allowed to grow near capsicum plants.
Why am I getting diseased fruits?
Blossom-end rot is a disease that appears as a brown dead patch at the base of the fruit. Help to prevent it by never allowing the potting soil in containers to dry out.

Spill the tea

All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended

Plants growing in containers need more fertilizing than those in the ground. The more you water, the more quickly you flush the nutrients out of the soil.

Plants with benefits

Bell pepper helps to lower homocysteine levels and reduces the risk of heart disease considerably.

What you get

Bell peppers are 94% water, 5% carbohydrates, and negligible fat and protein. Red capsicum is loaded with Vitamins A, B6, C and K, carotenoids, dietary fibre and folate

Green trivia

1.The coloured bell pepper is the only member of the genus Capsicum (chilies) that does not produce capsaicin, a lipophilic chemical that can cause a strong burning sensation when it comes in contact with mucous membranes.

2.A large pepper can provide upto 300% of your daily requirement of Vitamin C which is three times more than an orange.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I harvest yellow capsicum?

The fruits become ready for harvesting 45 to 50 days after transplanting. Harvesting can be done once a week for three to four months. Before the fruits ripen they are usually green and mild in flavour. They have a sweeter flavour when they are fully ripe with shiny yellow colour.

Any harvesting tips for yellow capsicums?

While picking, the fruits should be lifted gently after plant, without causing injury or breakage of the stem. Use scissors when harvesting the yellow capsicum. Do not pull the fruits away from the stems, as this may cause damage and provide an entry point for diseases.

What type of planting soil does the yellow capsicum plant need?

Red or sandy loam soil with pH of 5.5 to 6.8 is ideal. Soil should be fine, loose and well aerated for successful crop growth.

How often do you need to water the yellow capsicum plant?

Capsicum roots are very sensitive to too dry or too wet conditions. Soil must be kept moderately moist. Potted plants must be watered daily.
