Watermelon is an excellent dessert fruit and the fruit juice makes an excellent refreshing and cooling beverage after adding a pinch of salt and black pepper. Watermelon is a trailing annual vine with tendrils. The plant requires 6 to 8 hours of daily sunlight in order to produce fully formed melons. Although watermelon is a fruit, in cultivation practices it is treated as a vegetable.

Sowing
Best time to sow watermelon seeds is from October to march.
Watermelon is grown on the ground, open farmland, or yard gardens. Seeds are sown directly on outdoor raised beds.
Fertile, well-drained, sandy soil with plenty of organic manures is needed.
Seeds should be soaked overnight and kept at a moist warm place for 48 hours for initiation of germination.
Sow two to three pre-germinated seeds per spot in a spacing of 3 x 3 ft.
Push the seeds a little in soil with your fingers & completely cover them with surrounding soil.
Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower with a watering can.
Seeds will germinate within the first 6-8 days or so & tiny sprouts will be visible.
Second week onwards, seedlings will start growing into a small plants
Three weeks after germination, only single, healthy seedlings are allowed to grow at one spot & other slow growing seedlings are thinned out.
Caring
Watermelon plants require full sunlight.
A good source of irrigation is essential. If grown on a large scale, a drip irrigation system is recommended.
Because watermelon fruits are large, the vine is not grown on a trellis; it is rather allowed to trail on the ground.
Add good quality organic manure in the soil with 2:1 ratio before sowing seeds. Organic manure can be well rotten cow dung manure, farmyard manure, Compost or Vermicompost.
Always look for the early signs of any insect/fungal/ any other infections. Spay appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms of such diseases are spotted. Watch out for Powdery Mildew when plants are young.
Watermelon plants have separate Male & female flowers on the same plant. Fruits will be formed on female flowers after pollination.
Hand pollination of flowers: Take ‘pollens’ from male flowers on painting brush or cotton bud & dust them on ‘stigma’ of female flowers. This will increase the chances of getting more melons. This step is not mandatory.
On an average, the fruits ripen 90 to 120 days after sowing.
Irrigation should be stopped during ripening of fruits as watering at this stageadversely affects fruit quality and results in fruit cracking.
About 2 to 3 melons can be obtained per plant in its single lifespan of 3-4 months
Common Problems
Why is my watermelon Plant not growing? Watermelon requires a hot, dry climate and a long growing season preferably with warmer days and cooler nights. Avoid growing watermelon during the rainy season or cold winters. Why did my plant get small sized melons? Too many melons should not be allowed to grow on a single plant, as this will result in small sized fruits. Usually, gardeners purposely keep only one or two watermelon fruits per plant to harvest big sized fruits.

Maturity in watermelon can be judged from the withering of plants tendril, change in fruit belly colour or ground spot to yellow and thumping test. The mature fruits on thumping give a dull sound as against the metallic sound of unripe fruits. However, the knack of recognising a ripe melon comes with experience.
What type of soil does the crop need?
Sandy loam soils are best. Alluvial riverbeds are also good for watermelon. The soil should be well drained and should have ample organic matter.
How to increase the production of watermelons on a plant?
The excessive vine growth can be pruned manually to restrict the green growth and promote more female flowers. If apical shoot of the plant is pinched and 2 to 4 side shoots are allowed to grow, it gives significantly higher fruit yield.
How to water this crop?
Application water should be restricted to the base of the plants and root zone only. Irrigation water should not wet the vines, especially when flowering, or fruit development are in progress, as this may promote diseases.
What is Watermelon also popularly known as in India?
Regionally in India, Watermelon is also known as Tarbuj, Kalingad, Puchha kaya, Thannir Mathan.
