All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended
Fertilizer/ feed for the plant:Both the plants in the bundle are foliage plants and will do well with any generic garden fertiliser, such as NPK (19:19:19), given to the roots once every three weeks as per the dosage advised on the pack. The plants also do well with a foliar spray of NPK (19:19:19) every two to three weeks.
Repotting : The Sansevieria Superba is a long-lasting but slow growing plant that loves to be root bound and will not need frequent repotting, however changing its potting mix annually will give it fresh medium to grow in. The Areca Palm on the other hand is a fast grower and would require annual repotting in a slightly larger pot with a rich but well-draining potting mix.
Propogation : The Sansevieria can be propagated by leaf cuttings, the division of the rhizome (once the plant is of a good size) or through smaller plants, called pups, that spring up around the mother plant. The areca palm can be propagated through division of the stem by rooting stems that have nodes on them.
Slow growth
While the Sansevieria is a slow grower, giving it good light and prescribed fertilisers can increase its growth rate. As for the Areca palm, like any plant it will grow faster with sufficient lighting and slower in low to medium light. Although, avoid direct sunlight for both the plants.
Brown raised on areca palm
The Areca palm is fuss free in general but is susceptible to scales. If you see small brown raised dots on your plants, it is a scale infestation. Use a toothbrush and water to scrape the scales and then spray them with an organic pesticide like neem oil. Repeat the process weekly for a month for a healthy plant. Neem oil can be sued every 15 days as a preventive measure for all plants.
Wilting of Sansevieria
Sansevieria is a drought resistant plant and does better with underwatering than over watering. Limp, wilting, and mushy leaves are a sign of root rot due to overwatering. If the plant is fairly erect, repot it in a drier potting mix and water only when the soil is completely dry. If the plant is non-salvageable, take leaf cuttings from healthiest leaves to propagate.
Light Requirements :While the Areca Palm needs medium to bright indirect light for a good growth, the Sansevieria can live easily in medium to low light. Avoid strong direct sunlight for both the plants
Locations :These air purifying plants are great additions to all corners of your home. Add it to your bedrooms or workspace for cleaner air. They are excellent in any space that gets bright indirect light, like near windows or doors.
Styling/decor tip :Create a corner of sansevierias in different sizes for a very architectural and aesthetic look. The Areca Palms add a tropical vibe to your corners and can easily fit into any décor scheme. The Sansevieria also makes for a great addition to side and worktables. Areca palms are great for covered patios and sitting spaces.
