Sowing

  • Sage can be grown directly in pot, planter or container filled with good quality, well-draining soil mix.
  • Take off some topsoil (2-3 inches) from the centre of pot and make room for seed sowing.
  • Sow Sage seeds evenly in the pit and cover them with soil.
  • Water the pot regularly. Keep the surface damp.
  • Your Sage seeds should germinate in 2-3 weeks, depending on the season.
  • Keep your Sage pot in semi shade when the germinated seedlings are growing.
  • Cut off any extra, weakseedlings from the base after two weeks of germination to ensure your plants are evenly spaced.
Fill the cells/cups with a moist coco-peat medium

Caring

  • Once seedlings are growing, keep the Sage container in a sunny location.
  • Water your Sage plant moderately. Use a watering can to ensure an even shower.
  • Add a handful of vermicompost to your Thyme plant every month.
  • Look for the early signs fungal infection/ insect infestation. If you notice any symptoms, spray appropriate medicines immediately.
  • Spray Neem Oil/Tobacco extract/soap water to keep insects at bay.
  • 90 - 100days after sowing, your Sage seeds will be ready for harvest.
  • Sage can be harvested all year round.
  • Harvest couple of leaves at a time as needed.
Hold the seeds and sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup. Since Lavender seeds are small in size, do not sow them deep

Common Problems

1. My sage plant is turning yellow.
Inadequate watering can lead to leaves that turn yellow and eventually drop off. Make sure you are watering your sage plant moderately. Use a watering can to ensure an even shower.

2. Why does my sage leaves have brown spots?
Brown spots on your herbs is usually an indicator of over - watering or under - watering. Water your sage plant moderately. Make sure the top inch of the soil dries out before watering your plant again.

3. Why are my sage seeds not germinating?
Sage needs an evenly moist soil to grow. However, keep in mind that there is a very fine line between keeping the soil moist and over - watering. Over - watering will lead to failure in germination. Other reasons like improper soil or sowing your seed in too deep can also hamper the germination process.
