All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended

Plants growing in containers need more fertilizing than those in the ground. The more you water, the more quickly you flush the nutrients out of the soil.

Plant Essentials

Fertilizer/ feed for the plant:In its growing season of warm summer months, feed your orchid with a generic houseplant fertiliser diluted to half its strength every week. Don’t fertilise your plants in winter.
Repotting : Orchids take time to find their rhythm, but once they are in their happy spot they grow happily. Orchids love small planters so they wont need frequent repotting; however, refresh the potting mix every year for better growth.
Propagation : Orchids can be propagated via seeds or vegetatively from a mature mother plant by division.

Common Problems

1. Why is my orchid turning yellow and dying?
One of the major issue is its finicky nature. Orchids need to settle into a place that is brightly lit with at least a couple of hours of sun, well ventilated and temperatures between 20 to 30 degree Celsius. One major killer is overwatering.
2. Why is my orchid not flowering?
In its growing months of spring and summer, feed your orchid with a weekly dose of diluted fertiliser. Ensure good ventilation and plenty of light for good root and foliage growth. The plant will start flowering from fall through winter.
3. When should I water my orchids?
Orchids do better with underwatering than overwatering. That being said, water your orchids thoroughly, drenching them completely for a while and letting them drain completely before placing them back. Let the orchids dry out the top 3-4 inches of potting mix before watering them again.

Style and Decor

Light Requirements :Orchids prefer a few hours of direct light but keep them out of the harsh afternoon sun of Indian summers.
Locations :Orchids are known to be high-maintenance and rightly so. But with proper care they reward you with stalks of beautiful blooms. Place them in east or wet facing balconies or on window ills where they get enough sunlight and ventilation. Also, take care to maintain a fairly humid environment.
Styling/decor tip :Plant your orchids in planters that are wide and shallow and landscape the topsoil with rocks in interesting shape and colours to further elevate the arrangement. Contrasting the colour of the orchid with the colour of the planter also brings out the beauty.
