About the Lettuce Black Rose Seeds

Who says Italian is all about pastas? Their salads are both healthy and lip-smacking. The black rose lettuce is a relatively unknown variety, but just as amazing as any. It has curly, fan-shaped leaves in deep red and a shiny surface. The leaves form a compact rosette when they grow 5- to 8-inches. This lettuce has a slightly bitter and nutty flavour, making it the perfect balance for sweeter lettuces or dressings.

Sowing

  • In colder weather the seeds need to be germinated indoors before transplanting them outside, but can be started outside directly in warmer weather.
  • Fill up the medium sized cups of a seedling tray with moist cocopeat and plant 2-3 seeds per cup, approximately 0.5 to 1 cm below the surface and water with a soft spray or teaspoons.
  • In warmer weathers, plant the seeds directly in containers or soil beds. Ensure that the soil mix is light and well-draining. Plant the seeds with a 6 inch by 6 inch spacing in between them and cover with a light sprinkling of potting medium.
  • Water the seeds daily with a soft misting spray or teaspoon. The potting medium should never be dry. If planting outside, keep the containers in indirect light and protect it form direct sun or rain.
  • The seeds will germinate in 7 to 14 days. Retain the healthiest seedling and carefully prune the haggard one.
  • Keep the seedling tray indoors where it gets bright indirect light.
Fill the cells/cups with a moist coco-peat medium

Caring

  • Black rose thrives in partial sunlight of up to 6 hours every day, so ensure that the containers or soil beds are positioned accordingly.
  • Once the seedlings emerge and establish a good root system, transplant them to a larger container or soil bed with well draining growing medium. Mix a rich but light compost before planting.
  • Plant the saplings 6 inches by 8 inches apart and water them regularly to ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. Give the growing plants indirect sunlight of up to 6 hours every day.
  • The black rose can grow up to 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 inches in spread. The plant can be harvested from anywhere between 40-60 days of growth.
  • Harvest before its too late, very mature lettuce turns woody and bitter.
Hold the seeds and sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup. Since Lavender seeds are small in size, do not sow them deep

All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended

Plants growing in containers need more fertilizing than those in the ground. The more you water, the more quickly you flush the nutrients out of the soil.

Plants with benefits

Black rose lettuce is best suited for raw applications as its bright colour, curly texture, and mild taste is showcased when fresh. The leaves are most popularly added to salads with other greens as the curly leaves increase the surface area and have the ability to catch and hold salad dressing. The leaves can also be used as a garnish, layered in sandwiches, torn and sprinkled over soups, or served as a bed for cooked meat.
