About the French Bean Seeds
French beans are called string beans and snap beans in English and chavalicha shenga in Marathi. These are popular in salads and side dishes in healthy meals. Sowing
- French Bean seeds can be sown throughout the year.
- French Bean seeds can be sown directly in containers or on raised beds.
- You can use big sized circular pots or grow bag with 16” diameter and minimum depth of 8-10 inches to grow French Bean.
- Make sure the container of your choice has uniform drainage holes at the bottom.
- Fill this container with a growing medium of your choice.
- Ideal growing medium to grow French bean is 2 part garden soil & 1 part any organic manure or 1 part garden soil, 1 part Coco Peat & 1 part Vermicompost.
- Sow 2 seeds at the centre of your container.
- On raised beds, sow two seeds per spot keeping a distance of 2 x 2 ft.
- Push French bean seeds in the medium with your finger and cover the seeds with surrounding soil.
- Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower using a watering can.
Caring
- Your French beans seeds will germinate within first 6-8 days.
- Tiny seedlings will appear at this stage.
- Second week onwards, seedlings will start growing into a small French bean plant.
- After the seance week, keep only one seedling at one spot.
- Cut off small, weak and lagging seedlings with a pair of scissors.
- French Bean plant needs full sunlight in order to thrive. Make sure you keep your containers in a sunny spot and make your raised beds also in a spot which receives ample sunlight.
- Water your potted French bean plant every alternate day in winter & every day in summer.
- Use a watering can to make sure your plant gets water in the form of a shower. You can alternately also use a drip irrigation system.
- When your French bean plant is more than 45 days old, feedone tablespoon of 15:15:15 (NPK) fertilizer per plant or mix handful of Vermicompost in the soil around each plant.
- Keep a watch for early signs of any insect/fungal or any other infections. Use appropriate medicines if you notice any ofthese signs.
- In the second month, your French bean plant will start flowering.
- Fresh pods can be harvested 45 to 50 days after sowing the seeds. Harvesting season can continue for next three months.
Common Problems
My French beans are not growing big.
French Bean needs proper sunlight to grow. However, exposure to too much sunlight or very high temperatures can have adverse effects on the growth of your beans. Extremely high temperatures can lead to stunted French beans.
Why are my French bean seeds not germinating?
Improper growing conditions, like not enough sunlight, sowing your seeds in too deep, over - watering or under watering can affect the germination process of your seeds. Seeds will fail to germinate under such conditions.
Why are the leaves of my French bean plant turning yellow?
