Sowing

  • Fill a well-draining seedling tray with medium sized cups with cocopeat.
  • Plant 2-3 celery seeds per cup, taking care not to plant it too deep.
  • Moisten the growing medium with a few teaspoons of water or a fine misting spray so as not to dislodge the seeds.
  • Keep the seedling tray indoors till the seeds germinate.
  • You can also cover the seed tray with cardboard to promote faster germination.
  • If sowing the seeds outside protect it from direct sunlight or rain and cnstruct a temporary shed for protection.
Fill the cells/cups with a moist coco-peat medium

Caring

  • Once the celery seeds germinate in 6-8 days, place the tray in a partially sunny spot or a place that gets dappled light to promote leaf growth.
  • By the second week, the first true leaves will appear. At this point, expose the seeds to more sun and water more frequently.
  • After the second week, prune away the weaker seedlings and retain just one seedling per cup.
  • Transplant your celery seedlings either to a raised bed (spaced 6 inches) or a larger pot (more than 8 inches deep) filled with 2 part garden soil & 1 part organic manure, or 1 part garden soil, 1 part coco-peat & 1 part Vermicompost 30-35 days after sowing
  • Celery requires full to partial sun for a good growth and watering every other day in winters.
  • You can harvest celery 90-110 days from sowing.
Hold the seeds and sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup. Since Lavender seeds are small in size, do not sow them deep

Common Problems

Why are my celery seedlings collapsing?
Celery seedlings can collapse because of a disease called damping off which is the result of a fungus that usually grows because of high humidity. Make sure you use a well-drained soil and avoid over watering your seedlings.
Why are my celery leaves turning yellow?
Yellowing of celery leaves can arise due to a nutritional deficiency or a pest infestation/disease. Nitrogen deficiency can result in yellow celery leaves. Feed your celery plant a nitrogen rich fertiliser to correct the nutritional imbalance. If you notice any signs of diseases or pests ( aphids ) , spray your plant with appropriate medicines.
Why are celery seeds not germinating?
Improper watering or improper soil temperatures are one of the main reason why your seeds might fail to germinate. Sowing celery seeds in too deep, too much or too little watering also could be a why your seeds are not germinating.
