Sowing
You can sow carrot seeds in a container or on raised beds.
Pick a container of your choice (minimum depth of 12-14 inches ) with uniform drainage holes at the bottom.
Fill the container with selected growing medium.
Ideal growing medium for growing carrots is 2 part Garden Soil & 1 part any organic manure or 1 part garden soil, 1 part coco-peat & 1 part Vermicompost.
Before sowing the seeds, add a good quality organic manure in the ratio 2:1.
Use organic manure like the well rotten cow dung manure, farmyard manure, Compost or Vermicompost.
For sowing carrot seeds, make shallow holes (1 cm) with a distance of 1 x 1 feet throughout the surface of soil medium.
Sow 2 - 3 seeds per hole.
Push the seeds in with your finger and cover them completely with surrounding soil.
Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower with a watering can.
Caring
Your carrot seeds will start germinating by the sixth day after sowing, or earlier.
Small seedlings will appear 10 to 15 days after sowing. Out of the two per section, retain the stronger seedling and carefully remove the weaker seedling.
Carrot plants require full sunlight (6-8 hours) in winter, so place your containers or raised beds accordingly
Water your saplings every day with a uniform shower using either a can or drip irrigation.
Look for the early signs fungal infection/ insect infestation. If you notice any symptoms, spray appropriate medicines immediately.
Avoid adding nitrogen fertilizers in the later stages of plant growth for better root formation.
The carrots will be ready for harvesting approximately 100 - 120 days from sowing seeds, your carrots will be ready for harvest.
To harvest your carrots, uproot them from the soil completely.to uproot them from the soil along with the whole plant.
If the aim is to grow carrot microgreens, scatter the seeds uniformly in a dense container and harvest the microgreen 10-15 from sowing the seeds.
Common Problems
Why are my carrots seeds not germinating? Extreme hot temperature affect the germination process of carrot seeds. Over-watering is another reason why your carrot seeds fail to germinate. Carrot seedlings are collapsing. Overcrowding of seedlings , extreme humidity and overwatering are all reasons as to why your carrot seedlings are collapsing. Make sure you use a well-drained container when growing carrots and keep only one seedling per hole to ensure your seedlings grow well. Leaves of my carrot plant are curling up and turning brown. Curling of leaves accompanied with browning of leaf edges is a sign of potassium deficiency.
