Sowing

Capsicum can be sown throughout the year.

Take a seedling tray with medium sized cells & drainage holes at the bottom.

Fill the cells/cups with moist coco - peat if you are growing capsicum indoors. If you are growing capsicum outdoors, you can use fine soil as a growing medium.

Sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup.

Capsicum seeds are very small. Do not sow them in too deep.

Place your seeds on the surface of the medium and push the seeds in using the tip of a pencil. Cover these seeds completely with the growing medium of your choice.

Keep the seedling tray indoors till the seeds germinate.

To encourage faster germination, keep your seedling tray in a box or cover it with paper for first 4-5 days.

Provide 2 tablespoons of water every day to the seeds. Of you can also keep the seed tray in another tray full of water for half an hour so that the water will be absorbed by the seed cells from the bottom, via drainage holes.

If seeds are planted outdoors on seed beds, protect them from heavy rainfall or direct sunlight.

Cover your seed bed by making a temporary roof of a plastic sheet. Water it in the form of a light shower using a watering can.

Caring

Capsicum seeds will germinate within 6 - 8 days, at this stage expose the seedling tray to more sunlight to encourage leaf growth.

Keep one seedling per hole and cut off the smaller seedlings using a pair of scissors.

You can transplant the seedlings to container pots or raised beds 4 weeks after sowing in a planting mix of 2 part garden soil & 1 part organic manure OR 1 part garden soil, 1 part coco-peat & 1 part Vermicompost.

Plant the seedlings with its entire root ball, minimum 2 feet apart (60x60 or 60x45 cm) from each other and just one per 8-12 inch container.

Give the plant full sunlight in winter and partial sunlight in winter and water using a watering can.

Stake your plants to keep them upright and spray with horticultural spray in case of infections.

Immediately prune away any diseased or infected leaf and after approximately 35 days from sowing pinch the axial tip to promote branching.

Capsicum can be harvested 70 to 80 days from the sowing of seeds. If proper care is taken. Harvesting season can continue for 4-5 months or more.
